Environmental Management on Civils & Mining projects
NCC also provides environmental services to many other high profile projects in South Africa, within the Civils and Mining industries. We provide full time staff as well as consulting services i.e. Legal, Permitting, EMS, Performance Auditing, Waste Management, Water Management and more.
We provide environmental staff and services to the following related projects across South Africa:
Vaal River Eastern Subsystem Augmentation Project (VRESAP) - Murray & Roberts
VRESAP is a 121km sub-surface pipeline project, which starts at the Vaal dam and ends at Bosjespruit dam, outside Sasol in Secunda. The objective of this project is to meet the growing demand for water by Sasol and Eskom in the Mpumalanga Highveld region. The project commenced in 2006, rehabilitation of the 40m wide servitude has been successful and the project is now in its 12-month maintenance period. NCC provides an Environmental Manager to monitor compliance of this project.
New Multi Products Pipeline (NMPP) - Spiecapag
The New Multi Products Pipeline is divided into two sections: the inland network and the trunk line. The trunk line spans from Durban to Heidelberg between depots and will form a major part of the inland fuel supply network. It is a 24inch pipeline, which will be capable of transporting various fuel products such as unleaded petrol, leaded petrol and diesel. The inland network is a 16inch diameter pipeline divided into two separate lines:
a) Pipeline 4 (or PL4), 89km long, from Kendal (Mpumalanga) to Waltloo (Gauteng).
b) Jameson Park (Gauteng) to Langlaagte (Gauteng) via Alrode depot and is 71km in length.
NCC provides one Environmental Manager and two Environmental Officers to monitor compliance of this project.
NMPP Pump stations - Group 5 KZN
The Group 5 trunk line has three pump stations, all of which NCC is working on: PS1 is situated in Durban, while PS3 is outside Pietermaritzburg in KZN. This pump station powers the product in the trunk line to the Ladysmith area, before its massive push up the hill to Johannesburg. The final pump station, PS5 in Ladysmith, is currently a 3.5ha plot designed so that in future, additional turbines may be added to increase the throughput capacity of the pipeline. Operations on Pump station 5 began in February 2010 and its projected completion is February 2011. Further pump stations will come online in the future, but at the moment, only three are necessary. The NMPP project will replace the need for the existing (and ageing) Durban Johannesburg Pipeline (DJP), and greatly alleviate congestion on the N3 Toll Concession, road damage and pollution caused by freight vehicles supplying the inland demand for hydrocarbon fuels. NCC provides three Environmental Officers to monitor compliance of this project.
Sishen South Project - Kumba Iron Ore
Sishen South Project started in 2008 with only one contractor working on site. It has since escalated to about 36 main contractors and many more sub contractors. Sishen South Project is an Iron-Ore Open Cast Mine with three main pits: Leeuwfontein, Kapstewel and Klipbankfontein. Currently, blasting is taking place at Leeuwfontein to get to the iron ore layer. Construction is anticipated to be completed by August 2011. The iron ore obtained from Sishen South will be transported by train to Saldana Bay and exported internationally. NCC provides an Environmental Manager to monitor compliance of this project.
